Government jobs are the most sought-after jobs by various candidates across the nation. Paid leaves and benefits, fixed work hours, job security, and assured salary are a few of the rights that are exercised by government officials. To recruit for various sectors of public offices of Indian Government many exams are conducted throughout the year in which lakhs of candidates apply.

There is an eligibility criterion that has to be fulfilled by the candidates to apply for one or another exam. This criterion is mentioned in the notice issued by the concerned authority.

UPSC Civil Services Examination:

This exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission to hire civil servants for various departments. It is the most prestigious exam and a high-profile job for an Indian citizen. This exam requires rigorous preparation to crack it. The appointed officers affect the decision-making in the most important sectors of government administration and secretarial offices. The basic eligibility is graduation.

Combined Defense Services Examination (CDSE)

The Combined Defense Services Examination (abbreviated as CDS Exam) is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment of Commissioned Officers in the Indian Military AcademyOfficers Training AcademyIndian Naval Academy, and Indian Air Force Academy

Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE)

Commonly known as CMS it is conducted by the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) for the recruitment of Medical Officers in various organizations such as Indian Railways, Indian Ordnance Factories Health Service, New Delhi Municipal Council, East Delhi Municipal Corporation, North Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Corporation.

The aspirants, who have completed or have appeared in the final round of their MBBS exam, can apply for the exam. The exam is conducted online annually. The official website is upsc.gov.in.

Institute of Banking Personnel (IBPS)

The exams conducted by IBPS are for recruitment of posts like IBPS PO (Probationary Officers), IBPS Clerk, IBPS RRB (Regional Rural Bank: Officer scale I, II, III, and Office Assistants), IBPS SO (Specialist officer) across various banks. The IBPS recruitment exam is conducted once every year for all the posts separately. There are 11 banks from which candidates can choose to work for while filling the application form. Some of them are:

Bank of Baroda, Indian Overseas Bank, Bank of India, Punjab National Bank. Bank of Maharashtra, Central Bank of India, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, etc.

Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB)

One of the biggest employers in India RRB conducts recruitment for various posts including Technical and Non-Technical. It is one of the most anticipated and highly competitive exams conducted annually.

Candidates of different education levels are eligible including ones who have passed 10th standard, 12th standard, Diploma, Graduation, or Post Graduation.

The exams are classified into four groups: Group A, Group B, Group C, and Group D.

The highest-ranking officers are in Group A category whose recruitment is done directly by UPSC. The services include:

  • Indian Railway Traffic Service
  • Indian Railway Accounts Service
  • Indian Railway Personnel Service
  • Railway Protection Force

Recruitment for Group B:
The Group B officers are promoted from the Group C recruits.

Recruitment for Group C: 

Various posts include Assistant Station Master (ASM), Goods Guard, Loco Pilot, Assistant Loco Pilot, Senior Clerk, Traffic Apprentice, ECRC, etc.

Recruitment of Group C officers is done through the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) in the country, which is 19 in number and under the overall control of the Railway Recruitment Control Board of the Ministry of Railways. These RRBs undertake the recruitment process of the personnel in the zones and the production houses and other Railway departments in the zonal levels. They are responsible for inviting applications in the technical and non-technical cadre in Group C.

Recruitment for Group D:
Group D recruitment is done at the divisional level. This can also be carried out by the Headquarters of the Zonal Railway.

Group D posts lists- Track Maintainer, Helpers in Electrical/ Engineering/ Mechanical/ Signal and Telecommunication Departments, Porter, And Other similar Posts as Gateman, Pointsman, Switchman, Peon, Safaiwala, Khalasi, Cabinman, Shunter, Fitter, Keyman, Leverman, Gangman, Vendor, Assistant, Hospital Attendant, Sanitary Cleaner, Welder.

 Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (SSC CGL )

This exam is conducted annually to recruit staff for various posts in ministries, departments, and organizations of the Government of India. Candidates need to have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university at the time of applying. The exams test candidates in various fields like General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension. There are various tiers and each tier is a qualification exam for another tier.

Indian Engineering Services (IES)

Also referred to as Engineering Services Exam (ESE), IES Exam is another exam conducted by the Government of India. It is mainly a recruitment exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) with the aim to shortlist candidates for various engineering positions and vacancies under the different departments of the Government of India. It is organized for engineering branches, i.e. Electrical Engineering, Civil EngineeringMechanical Engineering, and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. More than two lakh aspirants appear for the IES exam every year and the test comprises a three-level recruitment procedure, i.e. IES Preliminary, IES Main followed by a Personality Test.

UGC NET

This exam aims to find candidates for the posts of Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) at Indian Universities and colleges. Conducted by National Test Agency (NTA), candidates who are either studying or completed their masters are eligible.
